How to Play Spider Solitaire

The goal is to build eight complete runs of the same suit, from King down to Ace. Each finished run leaves the table automatically.

• Tableau: ten columns. The first four start with six cards, the rest with five. Only the top card of each column starts face up.
• Building: place a card on any card that is exactly one rank higher, whatever its suit. A 6 can go on any 7.
• Moving runs: you can move several cards together only if they are the same suit and in descending order.
• Stock: 50 cards in five groups of ten. Click the stock to deal one card onto every column. You cannot deal while a column is empty, so fill gaps first.

1 Suit or 2 Suits?

1 suit uses only one suit, so every descending run is movable and the game is relaxed and a good way to learn. 2 suits adds hearts, so you must keep suits together when you can, and deals take real planning. Switch with the button in the toolbar; switching starts a new game.

Spider Strategy

• Uncover face-down cards first. The hidden cards are what block you, so favor moves that flip one.
• Build same-suit runs. Mixed-suit stacks are hard to move later, so connect cards of one suit whenever you can.
• Make an empty column early. An empty column lets you reposition runs and is worth a lot.
• Deal the stock last. Dealing buries every column, so make all useful moves before you do.
• Use Undo and Hint. Experiment freely; Hint shows a move that keeps the deal winnable.
